Hey Friend

What uncanny timing.

Last week I shared the importance of choosing a great state and attitude despite what your current circumstances are telling you.

Well, my circumstances on Monday morning sure put me to the test…

I was sitting in my chair at the front of the house looking out the bay windows, about to enjoy my favourite activity of the day.

My book was in hand, my trusty yellow highlighter on the table in front of me,  and my hot green tea resting on the right hand arm of the chair.

Our 8 month old daughter Florence was perched in her high chair to the left of me. Munching on some fruit.

As Kaci walked out the house to take Cosby for a walk, I noticed Florence dropped a grape on the floor.

Not wanting to get up from my comfy position, I leaned over to the left of my chair as far as I could to see if I could reach the grape.

But I leaned too far…

And fell out of my chair.

As I came crashing to the ground, I was screaming.

ARGHHHH!!!

It took my mind a hot minute to compute what was happening.

Remember the hot green tea that was sitting on the right hand side of my chair?

Well that tipped all down the back of my legs and lower back.

My loud screaming scared Florence (and probably the whole neighbourhood) and she started balling her eyes out.

Kaci had not yet got past the front of our house when she heard all the commotion and rushed back in.

What a sh*t show!

“I choose to have a great attitude.”
“I choose to be in great energy.”
“I choose to be in a great state.”

But my morning was about to get worse…

After cleaning up the mess, pouring another green tea and having a read – I headed into the office to start preparing for a podcast I had scheduled.

But I could already feel my mood and attitude was not where I wanted it to be.

As soon as I turned my laptop on, it was clear it was going to be one of ‘those’ mornings.

You know the ones.

Where everything that can go wrong, does go wrong lol.

My laptop was running slower than the dial-up internet days. I had to restart my laptop multiple times. Then it wouldn’t connect to the internet.

As my preparation time was getting eaten into, I became more and more irritable.

“I choose to have a great attitude.”
“I choose to be in great energy.”
“I choose to be in a great state.”

5 minutes before the podcast was scheduled to start, I finally accepted the situation for what it was.

There was no way I was going to have my tech issues sorted in time. So I contacted my guest to reschedule – thankfully he understood.

What a sh*t show!

The tech problems became a blessing in disguise.

Because I’d been putting up with poor laptop performance for far too long. And now I was finally in enough pain and had the time to get it sorted.

Why do we wait until breaking point to do something about our problems?

So I sat down with good ol’ ChatGPT to diagnose the tech issues.

That’s one of the things I love most about ChatGPT. I’m not a ‘tech guy’ – but I can easily have a conversation with it and diagnose and solve problems.

After a good hour and a half going back and forth with ChatGPT, I got my laptop back performing efficiently.

Just in time to hit the gym and reset my day.

“I choose to have a great attitude.”
“I choose to be in great energy.”
“I choose to be in a great state.”

But my day was about to get worse…

As soon as the warm up started, I could tell I wasn’t feeling my best. The humidity was high. And the back squats after the warm up felt extra heavy.

The final workout was to complete 5 rounds of the following movements in under 15 minutes.

  • 20 calories on the bike
  • 10 hang cleans (50kg)
  • 15 push ups

I was zoned in and focused. I finished the workout in 14 minutes 29 seconds. But because of the high humidity and my lower than usual energy levels, I completely cooked myself.

I laid on the gym floor in a pile of sweat trying to regain consciousness for a good 10 minutes lol.

“Sanka! Ya Dead?”
“Yeah, mon.”

I drove home from the gym in silence.

My mind, body and soul could not stand any auditory stimulation.

I had a shower. Smashed down a shake. And laid in bed with my ear plugs in and my blind fold on.

I felt like a broken man. My energy was cooked. My body was aching.

What a sh*t show!

The day felt like a complete write off.

But although I’d lost many battles, I knew the war could still be won.

“I choose to have a great attitude.”
“I choose to be in great energy.”
“I choose to be in a great state.”

There was one more commitment to see through. A coaching session with a couple I’ve been working with for the past 12 months.

I summoned the support from the big man upstairs to help me finish the day off being present for my clients and my family.

We had a great session that reenergised me.

And that meant I could be a present father to Cliffy and Florence while Kaci got dinner ready.

What can you learn from my sh*t show?

Some days just don’t go your way.

You scorch yourself with hot tea.
The tech decides to take a day off.
The workout slaps you across the face.

It’s easy to hulk, sulk, stew in a bad mood and let it ruin your whole day (or even your week).

And sure – it’s ok to feel p!ssed off for a little while. That’s human.

What really matters is how quickly you decide to reset.

Because setbacks are inevitable.
But staying stuck is a choice.

And you can’t control what life throws at you.
But you can always choose how to respond.

Have a great day,
Marshy
