Daniel:Hey Alex, tell us a bit about your business and who you help.
Alex:Thanks, Daniel! I run an occupational therapy service, mostly working with NDIS participants. We do community-based therapy, so we go to people’s homes, schools, or meet in natural settings to help them with meaningful activities, like personal care, going to work, or school.
Daniel:How long have you been in business?
Alex:I started in 2021 as a sole trader. But after a year, I knew I wanted to grow, so I transitioned to a company structure.
Daniel:That’s a big move! Why did you feel the need for coaching around finances?
Alex:Honestly, finances have never been my strong suit (I’ve always hated math!). I worked with accountants, but I was still missing that deep understanding of my numbers. I realised I needed someone to really break it down and help me get a grip on the financial side of the business.
Daniel:We had a finance strategy session where we really dug into your numbers. How did you feel afterward?
Alex:I felt a huge sense of relief and hope! Before, I was relying on others to manage my spreadsheets. But after our session, I finally understood what numbers to focus on, and how to take control of my finances.
Daniel:You mentioned before that working with a coach was different from working with an accountant. How so?
Alex:Accountants handle the tax and bookkeeping, but they don’t really teach you how to understand and manage your numbers. That’s what I got from working with you – it wasn’t just about someone doing it for me. You taught me how to take charge, track expenses, and really look at what’s coming in and going out. That was the game-changer.
Daniel:A lot of business owners rely on accounting software to manage their money. What’s been your experience?
Alex:Yeah, I’ve used Xero and others, but they can feel disconnected. When we worked through everything on Google Sheets and my bank statements, it felt more real. I finally had a clear picture of my numbers, and I could play around with the data, like budgeting and forecasting, in a way that made sense to me.
Daniel:I’m so glad you feel more empowered now! Any final thoughts?
Alex:I just want to say thank you, Daniel. You’ve given me the confidence and skills I needed to manage my business finances. I now feel in control, and that’s huge!
I love stories like Alex’s.
Because it shows how powerful it is to understand your numbers. And not just rely on someone else to manage them for you.
