Hey Legend,
This coming Monday marks 5 years since I handed in my resignation letter.
It was the 1st of September 2020 – right in the middle of COVID.
Who in their right mind quits a secure engineering job during a global pandemic?
This crazy guy apparently.
But the truth is, that day had been circled in my calendar for months.
The question was: would I have the courage to go through with it?
For 18 months I had been spinning too many plates.
Working full-time as an engineer, studying coaching, building my coaching business, playing football, staying on top of my health, keeping a social life, and planning a wedding.
It felt exhausting.
The problem was, I was half-assing everything.
- My clients weren’t getting the best of me
- My employer wasn’t getting the best of me
- And I wasn’t giving the best to myself either
Something had to give.
The truth became clear: an engineering career was never my calling.
I was grateful for the opportunities, but I had no burning desire to become a great mechanical engineer. I knew my calling was in coaching and helping others transform their lives.
In the lead up to the pivotal day, a close family member shared this with me:
“The Universe will dangle a carrot in front of you to test your commitment to your goals.”
And that’s exactly what happened.
On the morning of September 1st, I walked into a team meeting with my resignation letter in my pocket.
My boss stood at the front of the room, enthusiastically announcing a brand-new plant project.
And then came the kicker…
I was being promoted into a leadership role.
I sat there dazed and confused. On the very day I planned to quit, I was offered a promotion.
Talk about the Universe dangling a carrot in front of me!
After the meeting finished, I let everyone else leave.
Then I slowly walked back into my boss’s office, letter in hand.
My throat tightened. My eyes welled. The words barely came out.
“I’m sorry mate, but I’ve got a spanner to throw in the works.”
I placed my resignation letter on his desk.
His face dropped with disappointment. I hated the feeling of letting him down. But I knew if I didn’t do this, I would be letting myself down.
To his credit, he supported my decision – which meant the world to me.
I walked out his office with bittersweet emotions. But above all, I felt liberated.
Because I’d done it.
I’d kept the promise I made to myself.
I chose courage over comfort.
5 Years On
Looking back now, that single decision has shaped everything that followed.
Since then I’ve:
- Coached 230 people
- Delivered 102 group trainings
- Created 196 weekly newsletters
- Recorded 101 podcast episodes
- Moved from the country to the city
- Won a state Toastmasters championship
- Welcomed Clifford & Florence into the world after IVF
I wonder how my life would have turned out if I’d played it safe and taken the promotion?
The Big Lesson
In life, there are only a handful of decisions that truly shift your trajectory:
- Where you choose to live
- Who you choose to marry
- What career path you pursue
Those three decisions shape your future (and your happiness) more than anything else.
So let me ask you,
What’s the courageous decision you know you need to make right now?
