Life is hard when you’re overweight and out of shape.

The most mundane of tasks can feel like torture – putting on your socks or walking up a flight of stairs.

It’s easy to see when someone is out of shape.

There’s no hiding it.

Unlike physical fitness, financial fitness is much harder to see.

You can’t look at someone and gauge how financially fit they are based on their appearance.

They may signal financial fitness through bought status symbols – a luxury car, fashion items, all the latest gadgets.

But looks are deceiving when it comes to financial fitness.

You don’t know how they’ve purchased these luxury items.

You can’t see their bank balance, assets and liabilities.

You can’t see the underlying stress they feel trying to keep up the image they’ve created for themselves. You can’t see sleepless nights wondering how they will keep up with their repayments.

When you’re financially fit you radiate with an inner-confidence.

You don’t need status symbols to prove you’re financially fit.

People can subconsciously sense it by the way you carry yourself. You’re composed. You operate with a calm mind. You’re never in a rush. You sleep like an angel at night knowing you can handle any situation life throws at you.

Financial fitness isn’t something you can buy.

Financial fitness is something you must earn.

Financial fitness is the by-product of your character attributes, your financial aptitude and your habits around money.

Want to get a gauge on how financially fit you are?

Complete this quick assessment to find out.
1. Strong Cash Flow Management
  • Do you consistently earn more than you spend?
  • Do you have a budget or spending plan that aligns with your goals?
  • Do you avoid lifestyle inflation (spending more as you earn more)?
2. Healthy Savings & Emergency Fund
  • Do you have 3–6 months of living expenses saved for emergencies?
  • Do you regularly save for short-term and long-term goals?
  • Do you prioritize paying yourself first (automatic savings/investing)?
3. Low (or No) Debt & Smart Credit Use
  • Do you avoid or eliminate high-interest debt (e.g., credit cards, payday loans)?
  • Do you use debt strategically for assets (e.g., real estate, business investments)?
  • Do you have a strong credit score and can access good financing if needed?
4. Wealth-Building Investments
  • Do you invest in income-generating assets (stocks, real estate, businesses)?
  • Do your investments grow and compound over time?
  • Do you understand risk and diversification?
5. Protection & Risk Management
  • Do you have the right insurance (health, life, income protection, etc.)?
  • Do you have a legal will and estate plan in place?
  • Do you mitigate financial risks with proper planning?
6. Financial Independence & Freedom
  • Are you on track to reach financial independence (where passive income covers expenses)?
  • Do you make financial decisions based on choice, not necessity?
  • Do you have the ability to retire on your own terms?
7. Continuous Learning & Mindset
  • Do you keep improving your financial knowledge?
  • Do you have a growth mindset around money?
  • Do you surround yourself with financially savvy people?
How many of the 21 questions did you answer ‘YES’ to?

This will tell you your overall financial fitness score.

Was it in the range of 17 – 21?

11 – 16?

1 – 10?

If your score was high – well done!

If your score was low, or not as high as you’d like – don’t beat yourself up.

This is simply an assessment to give you awareness of where you are right now.
